There are plenty of free, or close to it, WordPress Themes out there making it tempting to take advantage. Before you bite, be aware there are some really ugly ones that might just take advantage of you. What I mean by ugly is, poor coding or themes injected with spyware or other malware including viruses.

You can protect yourself with a little precaution. Here are some outstanding resources:

  • THEME CHECK – is a quick service that lets you verify WordPress themes for security and code quality.
This service is free and compatible with Joomla templates.
  • SECURI – Enter a URL (ex. and the Sucuri SiteCheck scanner will check the website for known malware, blacklisting status, website errors, and out-of-date software. Securi was recently purchased by GoDaddy and there is a free WordPress plugin available.
  • VIRUS TOTAL – VirusTotal is a free service that analyzes suspicious files and URLs and facilitates the quick detection of viruses, worms, trojans, and all kinds of malware.

Some free themes are excellent, so no bad rap here. But others, as they say, you get what you pay for.

Premium themes, those you pay for, can save you from a world hurt and expensive maintenance down the road. Look for known vendors with good reputations, support service after the sale, commitment to stay current, and a money back guarantee. To the right are a few I recommend, in no particular order.
